Dangers of home hair dye

by Rebecca Dart

The death of a teenager, following a severe allergic reaction to her home hair colouring kit, has sparked an online petition to ban a chemical used in the kits.

The petition to ban the chemical p-Phenylenediamine (PPD) came after the death of 17-year-old Tabatha McCourt, who suffered a violent fit only 20 mins after applying the dye.

Canterbury Now spoke to Christine Bacon, from Oaks Hair in Canterbury, about the dangers involved with home hair colour kits.

One of the issues she raised was that an allergy test should be carried out 48 hours in advance to avoid a severe reaction to any of the chemicals involved.
